The Department of Business Analytics and Statistics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for two or more tenure track positions in Data Science. Appointment may be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on qualifications. Duties include conducting research in the field of business analytics; collaborating with other faculty and students; building and maintaining a strong record of publications in top-tier journals; teaching courses related to business analytics at the undergraduate, masters, and/or PhD levels; and advising students and facilitating industry connections.

The position requires a Ph.D. at the time of appointment in Data Science, Business Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field. Candidates who have not completed a Ph.D. by the time of appointment will be assigned to a one-year appointment as an Instructor. The position also requires publication or working papers in the field of data analytics; demonstrated knowledge of data modeling, big data technologies, or machine learning; ability to analyze data from traditional or emerging sources; and successful completion of a background check.

Representatives from the department will be attending the INFORMS 2018 conference in Phoenix, as well as the ICIS 2018 conference in San Francisco. Candidates who wish to meet at these conferences are encouraged to submit their application at least one week prior to the conference date. The Department of Business Analytics and Statistics is one of seven departments within the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee. The Department currently offers bachelors and masters degrees in Business Analytics (MSBA), a Ph.D. degree in Analytics, as well as a dual M.B.A./M.S. in Business Analytics in conjunction with the College’s MBA program. The Department also leads the University’s Intercollegiate Graduate Statistics Program and has the director of a Data Science and Engineering PhD program. INFORMS awarded the 2018 Smith Prize to our MSBA program, recognizing its excellence in preparing analytics practitioners. We have been very successful in placing our MSBA students in Fortune 500 companies as well as in new analytics organizations. The department emphasizes working with business through 1) 10+ capstone projects each year with partner companies, 2) our Business Analytics Forum in which non-competing companies meet to share best practices, and 3) an active seminar series where we host business analytics professionals. The faculty is active in publishing and numerous members serve on leading editorial boards. Faculty excellence has been recognized by international and national awards, including the Edelman Award, the Wagner Prize, etc.
